We have covered most, but not all, of the sewing basics.
For example, we have not covered proper fitting
techniques, which is a must for sewing adult garments,
nor did we cover installing a zipper, sewing pants, and
inserting elastic into a casing, to name a few. Many of
these techniques can be found in the websites listed on
this site.

The techniques that were shown here on this website can
be transferred to any other sewing project that you may
understake. In fact, much of your sewing should now be

Reader's Digest Complete Guide to Sewing--this
is one of my favorite books for all seamstresses
because it covers all aspects of sewing-- sewing
techniques from the most basic to the most
advanced, and has great illustrations, as well as
some color pictures.

Fabric Savvy and More Fabric Savvy by Sandra
Betzina--these books (the latter being the newer
version) tell you which presser foot and which stitch
length to use with all types of fabrics. Also included
are instructions on how to prepare, sew, and press
particular fabrics.

I can highly recommend all of Sandra Betzina's
books, which can be purchased on her website.

Magazines

Sew News: This is a great magazine for
seamstresses of all levels! There are tips and
techniqes in every issue.

Threads magazine is another good magazine, but it
seems to be geared more to the experienced
seamstress, rather than beginners. It's still worth
checking out, especially as you build your sewing
skills.

More information

Fabric grainline is important! The straight of grain is
parallel to the selvedge edge of the fabric. Most
pattern pieces are placed on the straight of grain.

Normal stitch length is usually about 2.2 or 2.5.

Check the manual for correct tension settings for your
machine.

If you're using a 100% cotton medium weight fabric, I
recommend using a size 11 universal needle.

Also, please keep in mind that you will probably not
be using the same pattern that I'm using for my
sewing project. The particular pattern that I'm using
does help teach a lot of basic sewing techniques that
can be transferred to any project you might be
working on as well.

beginning sewing. If I can't answer a question, I will
try to give you other resources that may be able to
answer your sewing questions.
