Sewing Shorts/Pants, Cont'd
As you noticed, the crotch seam on a pair of pants/shorts forms a "U". I have sewn a pair of shorts with
some contrasting fabric to help you visualize how to sew the crotch seam better. Once you have sewn
two separate legs of the pair of pants or shorts, you will then turn one leg so that the
Wrong side of the
fabric is showing, and the other leg will be turned so that the
Right side of the fabric is showing. You will
insert one pants/shorts leg into the other one,
right sides of fabric together. The crotch seam will
form a curve, much like the letter"U". One leg of the pants or shorts will be turned right side out, and the
other leg will be turned wrong side out.
Insert the right side out leg into the wrong side out
leg; this is putting the right sides of the fabric together.
This may look a little funny, but the pink fabric is Wrong side out,
and the leg that has been sewn in two different
fabrics is Right
side out. Insert one leg into the other, and then sew the crotch
seam, just like you would sew any other seam. It's not even too
hard to sew the inner curve of the crotch seam if you watch the
edge of the fabric and not the needle.
Match the inside
leg seams and
then pin the
crotch seam, as
shown here.
Start at the end
of the seam and
sew, sewing
slowly around
the curve of the
crotch seam.
