How to Sew Shorts/Pants Cont'd |
Using a safety pin, or a bodkin if you have one, insert elastic into the casing until it comes out the other side. Most patterns will instruct you on how much elastic to cut. On many patterns, it is the waist measurement plus one inch. I have always done this my own way, and that is what I'm sharing with you here. I insert the elastic until it is all the way through, and then I cut the excess off and overlap it somewhat, enclosing it in a piece of scrap fabric. I zigzag the fabric over the overlapped elastic and then enclose the elastic in the casing. I stretch the elastic a bit while sewing the casing closed. |

I tried to get a picture of zigzagging the fabric scrap over the elastic, but it turned out too light. In the picture above, the next step would be to wrap the fabric around the overlapped elastic and zigzag. Then insert the elastic into the casing as shown in the picture on the left. |
